Lesson Structure

What Your Child Will Learn

Your child will learn Infant Swimming Resource’s Self-Rescue™ survival swimming. It is a 4-6 week course, scheduled 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day.

The focus is on safe, customized, one-on-one lessons taught by a Certified Instructor. ISR’s survival swimming lessons emphasize health, ongoing program evaluations and parent education to deliver the most effective and safest results in the industry.

ISR’s “hands-on” instruction technique has been researched and developed for over 45 years and offers a proven system for safely teaching your child life saving survival swimming skills.

Technique & Lessons

Children may begin lessons at 6 months of age
until 6 years of age.

6-12 month old-lessons will focus on teaching the child to roll onto his or her back to float, rest and breathe. They will be taught to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives.

1-6 years old-lessons will focus on teaching the swim-float-swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with their head down; roll onto their back to float, rest and breath; and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or until they can be rescued. Once the children are fully skilled they will practice ISR’s survival techniques fully clothed during lessons. It is recommended that children complete refresher lessons to help their in-water skill level grow with their physical development.

Refresher lessons are extremely important in continuing and maintaining your child’s Self-Rescue™ skill development. Children grow and develop rapidly from infants to toddlers and young children. This development process represents improved strength, coordination, and more finely tuned cognitive ability. In accordance with this growth, children enrolled in ISR return periodically to participate in Refresher Lessons. Refresher lessons are designed to fine-tune your child’s existing Self-Rescue™ skills to meet the demands of their growing bodies. It will allow them to make adjustments in their float and strengthen their swim.

Maintenance lessons are also available at any time for regular fine-tuning of your child’s skills.

Initial Lessons

All lessons are Monday through Friday. Typically the classes will run for 4-6 weeks depending on the students progress, illness or weather issues that may interfere with lessons.

Refresher Lessons

Refresher lessons are a condensed version of the initial ISR lessons and are recommended on an annual basis. Children grow rapidly during the course of a year and are continually developing new skills. Refresher lessons assist the child to adjust their old skills to their new selves. It is not unusual for children to not swim or float at the same skill level that they did at their last seasons lessons. This does not mean that they have forgotten to swim or float, only that they need to practice their skills in their new larger, stronger body. The length of refresher lessons will vary greatly based on the childs water experience and any interference that may have occurred since last season. These are for students who have completed their swim/float/swim sequence. If your child was a floater last year they will need 4-6 weeks, Monday through Friday to learn their swim/float/swim.

Maintenance Lessons

Maintenance lessons are designed to regularly fine tune the students skills, or to prevent problems with the childs technique. As a childs confidence in the water grows, they may try to experiment with new behaviors or try to emulate siblings or adults. This may negatively affect his or her ability to swim and/or float. Children who are trained early in the season or who regularly are in the water with other children may benefit from maintenance lessons. These lessons are conducted once every one or two weeks, based on the Instructors assessment of the need and the parents scheduling preferences.

Initial and refresher lessons require an online registration with ISR. I will give you the url code to register after you have contacted me. Maintenance lessons require an updated registration every 6 months. Fees for updating a registration are assessed once per calendar year.
